History of Lake Oahe

Lake Oahe was formed behind a man-made dam built from 1948 to 1959 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers on the Missouri River.  Its the fourth largest man-made reservoir in the United States.  The dam is 245 feet high, holding back a lake that stretches over 231 miles long, is 205 feet deep and has 2,250 miles of shoreline.  It's located just north of Pierre, South Dakota.

It was named for the Oahe Indian Mission established among Lakota Sioux in 1874.  The dam provides flood control, electric power, irrigation, and better navigation.

Today Lake Oahe is known far and wide for it's walleye fishing.  The primary prey is rainbow smelt and gizzard shad, which are great prey producing some real record fishing.  Other fish species in Lake Oahe include salmon, northern pike, yellow perch, channel catfish, chinook salmon, white bass and smallmouth bass.  For more on these check out the Lake Oahe fishing forecast from the South Dakota Game Fish and Parks, click here.
